The origins of the Kush cannabis family are rooted in the Hindu-Kush Mountains that meander through the borders of modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan. Thousands of years, possibly tens of thousands of years ago man was growing Kush here.
Smugglers transported the prized landrace heavy duty Mountain Kush seeds out of the region throughout the 1970’s. Both American and European strain hunters following the “hippie trail” crossed paths with the Kush on their travels. We’ve succinctly filled you in on the What, Where and When.
Who? Is hotly debated with too many tall tales to know for sure which individuals are owed the credit for bringing ancient Kush genetics to the West. However, we can be certain that it happened just in time. In 1979 the former Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and so began a terrible trend. Ever since War and conflict have plagued the whole Middle-East.
Civilian Kush seed hunting expeditions have all but ceased. Fortunately, breeders from the US and Europe have been cultivating, hybridising and refining vintage Kush genetics for close to 50 years now.
And here's our own Top 10!
One strain sits on the Kush throne and in our opinion, the queen of all Kush varieties is the OG Kush. Reputedly a mix of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush the OG Kush is undoubtedly connoisseur cannabis.
20%+ THC levels from neon green gooey buds that hit you like a one-two punch combo of uplifting sativa followed by narcotic indica effects have made OG Kush a living legend. Critically acclaimed and beloved by ordinary decent stoners everywhere this Kush is a cut above the rest. Believe the hype. Gooble, Gobble, Gooble, Gobble. One of us! Grow some OG Kush.
If you really can’t get enough of that wonderful Kush? Then you need to get a pack of Critical Kush right away. Crossing the hottest Kush strain, OG Kush with the mega productive commercial growers favourite Critical bulks up yields without diminishing 20%+ THC potency. Critical Kush is a fast flowering compact indica hybrid. Ideally suited to beginner growers and connoisseurs.
In just 60 days of bloom or less this strain can perform to the highest standards with minimal maintenance required. Highly responsive to bloom boosters and tolerant of high doses of fertiliser. Critical Kush can yield in excess of 500g/m² indoors. Outdoors in a sunny spot with large containers and some privacy dense bushes 1m-1.5m in height can produce 500g or more.
For the grower that loves classic Kush and hates to let winning genetics slip through their fingers. We recommend the Master Kush. This old school hybrid of Hindu Kush and Skunk #1 is a pleasure to crop and a really nice strain to clone with a high success rate.
Selecting a mother plant from Master Kush couldn’t be easier as she is very stable and expresses little variation even when grown from seed. Most Master Kush will stay short and stocky and race to harvest in 8-9 weeks.
Watch out for mold in high humidity environments. Colas will swell significantly in the final weeks of flowering. Lesser known as a stealth Kush due to her more subtle growing odour. A low-profile Kush in more ways than one. Delivering a mellow physical effect rather than a heavy couchlock.
Perhaps the most simplistic Kush hybrid to cultivate and definitely one of the highest yielding is the Power Kush. A pedigree lineage of Afghani #1 and Skunk #1 gives this unique Kush hybrid a well balanced indica-sativa effect. The cerebral component is euphoric and hits you first. Not too racy, but pleasant. Shortly followed by a tranquil body stoned effect.
Phenomenal hybrid vigour is what sets this Kush apart from all others. Flowering time is a mere 7 weeks. Yields can be spectacular indoors and especially outdoors in Southern Europe. The SOG method can deliver up to 550g/m². Planted in large containers in strong sunlight up to 1kg per plant has been reported by experienced Mediterranean growers. This Kush is fast and furious.
Cataract Kush is a favourite amongst US growers and one of the dankest Kush hybrids on the market. Created by crossing two of the finest Kush legends from the States the O.G. Kush and LA Confidential. To say this weed is pungent is an understatement. The Cataract Kush is Loud! Skunky-fuel odour clings to the air so make sure to use carbon filters.
Classic Mountain Kush in appearance with over sized fat fingered dark green leaves and thick stems. Indoor yields can be as high as 500g/m² and outdoors 80g+ is about the average in a hot dry climate. Heavy doses of fertiliser can be applied and topping plants is recommended for max yield.
Cataract Kush has a creeping stoned effect that all of a sudden glues you to the couch. The transition from fine to FUBAR is signalled by cataract-like vision and jelly legs. Devastatingly potent next generation Kush for heavyweight tokers.
What do you get when you cross O.G. Kush and Grape? Bona fide cannabis royalty. Hail to the King’s Kush. For the indoor grower that favours the ScrOG method or prefers to LST plants, this is the must-grow Kush strain for you.
By the end of the 9 week bloom cycle King’s Kush will have gradually transformed from green to almost black in leaf colouration. Buds are dense frosty and lime green. Visually stunning in the cannabis garden. 20%THC, sweet and sour flavours and a long lasting happy mellow high will make you a loyal cropper of the King’s Kush.
Lemon Kush is a sour delight to smoke with a surprisingly uplifting sativa kick. Her lineage is similar to the O.G. Kush. Differentiated by a distinctly different lemon sativa phenotype. Believed to be a blend of choice cuts of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Pakistani Kush hybridised in the US West Coast. Instead of an intense O.G. Kush couchlock, an inspirational creative high makes for a pleasant surprise.
Rather than a sweet citrus fruity flavour the Lemon Kush is more sour and a bitter lemon. In 8-10 weeks of bloom, this sativa leaning Kush can become stretchy without pruning and/or training. ScrOG for max canopy control and yield. Moreover, this Kush is thirsty for nutrients and performs exceptionally in hydroponics. Nuggs are tight and covered in sticky resin. Buds exude classic indica traits. But make no mistake this is gourmet head stash with 20%+ THC.
Vanilla Kush is the delicious progeny of heirloom Kashmiri and Afghani strains. This amazing mountain Kush hybrid was selectively bred to check every box on the heavy duty indica wish list. But what sets this Kush apart from the rest is her unique vanilla smell and taste.
The Vanilla Kush grows like a dark green branchy dwarf. Ultra compact with very short internodal spacing. Plants normally peak in height below 1m even outdoors in full sun. Of all the top-shelf Kush hybrids the Vanilla Kush is one of the tastiest and most versatile. This strain performs well in a variety of substrates indoors or outdoors. Enjoy a night cap toke of sticky green dessert after just 8 weeks of bloom. Generous harvests of dank tranquilising 22%THC rock hard Kush nuggs can even be cropped by beginners.
Wild authentic Mountain Kush untainted by modern crossings are prized breeding stock. Hindu Kush is the original mysterious marijuana from the Hindu Kush Mountains. Entire seed banks have been founded on these ancient landrace genetics.
Hindu Kush is a compact, tough and sturdy plant that is very easy to cultivate and requires minimal nutrients. Grows like a clone even from seed. Made for SOG grows indoors and outdoor covert balcony grows. 7 weeks of bloom is all that’s required to bring her to harvest. Organic soil cropping is highly recommended to unlock the classic earthy, hash and sandalwood aromas. This smoke is old school chill out stash, very relaxing but not too overwhelming.
The Afghan Kush is arguably the Kush that kick-started the modern Kush renaissance. These genetics were allegedly smuggled out of Afghanistan just prior to the 1979 Soviet invasion. Innumerable hybrids and elite phenotypes stabilised into new strains owe trace their lineage to landrace Afghan Kush genetics.
Phenomenally potent even by today’s super high THC standards. This old school hash farmers strain is still some of the stickiest cannabis in the game. Plants are squat typically 60-90cm tall and almost as wide as they are tall when grown indoors. No pruning or training required.
Outdoors 2m+ monster bushes can be cropped in Mediterranean climates. The smoke can be a little harsh and hash-like for some. Don’t forget this is old school Charras material. Indica connoisseurs and those looking for reliable potent and productive plants make room in the cannabis garden for this Kush veteran.
